First, this image is /u/englishnotgentleman.
It shows many things. The most important is that Elo rating is divided into sets of 100 points, which are called skill levels. You get matched with people with close to your skill level. You get poins depending on the result. The exact formula is unknown currently, but you can get from 3 points to at least 39. Team star rating affects the point distribution. And now you can at with a low price and instant delivery.
Now to the important consequences.
1. You get matched to people closely to your skill level. If you advance a level, you can match to more difficult opponents, so this is why you have stretches of bad streaks which end when you get dropped back to the lower level. Additionally, this is why you can get matched to opponents outside of your division.
2. Team star rating affects point distribution and so in long term the skills level, so bronze-benching or other techniques which result to a lower team rating affect matching, so it really works. Maybe this is what is called handicap. Having a worse team means that you get matched to worse opponents.
This is for seasons, but is 99% for FUT too, as matchmaking has to be the same. More to follow.
More details about 1:
So. All the pictures feature opponents with same or difference of 1 skill level. This shows you are matched against opponents with similar skill level. Next, it shows the points needed to go up a skill level, and you can see clearly that one player needs only 6 points to go to the next level. So, if he goes to the next level, he will get matched to players with the new or +/-1 skill level. We can see that the losing player also gains or looses(from the other pictures) less points. So that's why you get bad stretches of games, because while with one game you can go up a skill level, it may require another 5-6 games to drop to the previous skill level.
